What is a panchang? Pancha-anga — the five limbs of the day: tithi (the lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon's star), yoga (the Sun–Moon combination), karana (half a tithi) and vara (the weekday). Together they describe the quality of the day before anything is begun in it.

Rahu Kaal is the roughly 90-minute stretch ruled by Rahu, different on each weekday. New beginnings — signing, buying, starting a journey — are traditionally kept out of it; routine work continues as usual.

Abhijit Muhurat, the window around midday, is considered auspicious on almost every day — the day's built-in shubh muhurat when no other is available.
