Deepotsav opens with the worship of the cow and her calf. Vasu Baras honours Nandini, the wish-fulfilling cow, and families — especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat — offer her fodder, bathe her and circle her in gratitude for nourishment and prosperity.

The day sets the tone of the festival week: gratitude before acquisition. Many households also begin their Diwali cleaning and ledger preparation from Vasu Baras.
