Govardhan Puja remembers Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to shelter the people of Braj from Indra's storm. Temples and homes prepare Annakut — a mountain of food — offered first to Krishna and then shared with everyone, including those outside the door.

The day teaches the festival week's second lesson, after Dhanteras' gratitude: protection is a duty, and abundance is meant to be distributed. In many regions the day also begins the Gujarati new year (Bestu Varas).
