Diwali 2026 — Lakshmi Puja

Date: Sunday, 8 November 2026
Observance: Kartik Amavasya

Diwali, the festival of lights, falls on Kartik Amavasya — the darkest night of the month, answered with rows of lamps. It celebrates Rama's return to Ayodhya, Krishna's victory over Narakasura, and above all the worship of Lakshmi, who is believed to visit clean, lit homes on this night.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat (New Delhi): 5:54 PM – 7:50 PM. The puja is kept in pradosh kaal, after sunset, with the household's books and tools blessed alongside. Govardhan Puja follows on 10 November and Bhai Dooj on 11 November, completing Deepotsav.

Diwali night is also the traditional start of the new financial year for many trading families — a night to close old accounts, forgive old debts of the heart, and begin clean.
