Dhanteras 2026

Date: Friday, 6 November 2026
Observance: Kartik Krishna Trayodashi

Dhanteras marks the day Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, rose from the ocean of milk carrying the pot of amrita. It is kept as a day of health first and wealth second: Lakshmi and Kuber are worshipped in the evening pradosh, lamps are lit at the door, and thirteen diyas are traditionally placed for Yama to keep untimely death away.

The custom of buying metal — gold, silver, steel or copper — comes from the belief that a purchase on Dhanteras invites the new into the house on an auspicious ledger. Whatever the purchase, the evening puja is the heart of the day.
